I have a book called Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, edited by Alan K. Russell, which is a great one to add to your shelf. It’s a collection of non-Holmesian mysteries from late-Victorian periodicals like our beloved Strand. Several feature illustrations by Sidney Paget. It’s fun to see his work outside the Canon. He even illustrated some other stories by ACD.

Here are some examples. Do you have others?

These are so lovely! I would imagine Paget is best known for his Holmes work, but did he have a career outside of creating illustrations to accompany stories?

    (I don’t have anything pretty to share. I’m a failure, I know.)

According to A Trifling Monograph, “between 1879 and 1905, Paget contributed to the Royal Academy exhibitions eighteen miscellaneous paintings, of which nine were portraits.”

    Here are some landscapes!

Also please enjoy SP in a deerstalker.

Oh, his landscapes are beautiful! I’ve never seen any of these — how brilliant.

No, seriously, did you Photoshop a deerstalker on that poor man’s head, or did he wear it willingly? Would someone willingly wear that hat? I’m so suspicious.

I swear it’s a real Paget head with a real deerstalker on it!

Unbelievable! I was sure that was a keen Photoshopping moment. I wonder why one might don a deerstalker to go on a leisurely … paddle? … about a pond. Maybe if I was a brilliant artist, I would understand this impulse implicitly.

Wasn’t his brother originally supposed to be the artist & then Sidney modeled Holmes after him?

Walter was supposed to get the commission, yes, but SP claimed he was not the model for Holmes. But if you ask me, Walter and Holmes look a lot alike…

            Yeah, I think Sidney told a fib…

              +1. Sid’s a straight up liar. 😉
